“Path to Power: Kusile Power Station’s Role in Mitigating South Africa’s Load Shedding Crisis”

Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the Minister of Electricity, has expressed his optimism that the ongoing load shedding crisis in South Africa can be mitigated by the Kusile power station in Witbank, Mpumalanga. The station, which has been underperforming, is a multi-billion rand 3,200MW coal-fired power station. desulphurization.

The Kusile and Koeberg nuclear power stations are the primary contributors to the energy crisis, having removed at least 3,000MW from Eskom’s generation capacity. However, the minister is hopeful that some units at Kusile will be back in service soon. He stated, “We make the point that Kusile sits on a critical path. It gives us a path to ending load shedding.”

Last week, Eskom implemented Stage 6 load shedding due to increased breakdowns. Some analysts believe that Eskom encountered Stage 7 load-shedding, marking the most severe level recorded. Despite these setbacks, the minister acknowledged that the deployment of experts to relevant power stations had averted a catastrophe.

The power utility eased the intensity of load shedding over the weekend to between stages 1 and 4 after reducing breakdowns to 15,895MW of generating capacity. A generating unit each at Camden and Kendal power stations was taken offline for repairs.

He emphasized the commitment to fixing the units and utilizing the fiscal support provided by the National Treasury. He said, “Like I said, it’s short-term pain but long-term gain.” The minister is confident that consistent progress in improving Eskom’s energy availability factor will eventually lead to the end of load shedding.
